In this 90 minute lecture including a power point presentation with an extensive question and answer period, Brainard Carey will cover the following topics:

• Independent income models including examples from
Christo, Tino Sehgal, Emmanuel Flippo, and Brainard Carey.
The presentation details exactly how these artists work outside the standard gallery system to earn major incomes. All aspects are fully explained, providing new artists with tools to imitate the systems described or create their own system.

• Sponsorship: The how and why. This will provide details and stories of securing sponsors. Brainard Carey has secured the sponsorship of major companies such as Apple, Bose, and Gibson.
All letters to these companies will be shown so the process of securing sponsorship is very clear.

• How Brainard Carey got into the Whitney Biennial through an unsolicited submission. Including letters that were written and
all documents involved.

• How he received a solo show at the Whitney Museum that was a “commission” by the museum, even though he approached the museum and proposed the show. All details provided.

Brainard Carey is an artist, professional career coach and grant writer.
He owned a gallery for ten years, overseeing all aspects of the business, and also published a literary magazine which he designed, published and for which he secured all advertising revenue. In 2000 he and his wife created a collaborative called Praxis which has been included in many solo and group exhibitions at such venues as the Whitney, the MoMA and Reina Sofia in Madrid. In addition to continually creating and securing funding for new projects as part of Praxis, Brainard is a professional fund raiser, writes grants for artists, teaches business skills for artists and publishes a newsletter on how to raise funds for projects, create proposals for museums, galleries and public spaces and navigate the art world.
