9/17/2010 - 9th STREET SUBWAY STATION

Deadline: September 17, 2010.

MTA Arts for Transit seeks artists’ images of past work to be considered for a commission to create public art at the Smith-9th Street subway stations along the Culver Line F.

One artist will be selected for this commission.
Artists’ packages are reviewed by a selection panel and finalists will be selected to create site-specific proposals. The rehabilitation of the station includes a new entrance structure, platforms, wall surfaces, facilities and escalator repair. Approximately 1% of the construction budget is allocated for design and fabrication of permanent artwork.

The commissioned artist will create designs that will be reproduced in one or more of the following media: mosaic, ceramic tile or laminated glass. The elevated station is located in the Gowanus community and the artwork will be in key locations at the entrance area, and along the escalator walls leading up to the platform. Approved fabricators will translate the selected artwork into the selected medium, and therefore, artists’ prior experience with this material is not required.

Budget: $200,000.
