Director of Career Development
The Maryland Institute College of Art, one of the nation’s leading art and design colleges, invites applications for the position of Director of The Joseph Meyerhoff Center for Career Development. Located in Baltimore, MICA is dedicated to the education of professional artists at the undergraduate and graduate level, and attracts top creative thinkers. MICA is also recognized as an important cultural resource for the Baltimore-Washington region, sponsoring many public and community outreach-programs.
Position Description:
The Director of the Joseph Meyerhoff Center for Career Development provides institutional leadership in areas of professional development for students and alumni at one of the nation’s leading art colleges.
This position serves as a vital educator on and off the MICA campus, and partners with faculty members, vice presidents, alumni and parents as well as other constituencies to lead and coordinate a comprehensive career development operation. Students at MICA are engaging, talented, and nationally competitive artists and the campus is a growing and vital cultural organization in the Mid-Atlantic region. The ideal candidate will advise students both within the academic curriculum and in co-curricular formats. This position reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs.
Duties include:
• Supervise Career Counselor/Internship Coordinator, Career
Counselor/Grant and Fellowship Advisor, Employee Relations Coordinator, Administrative Assistant and undergraduate peer career advisors
• Orchestrate networking opportunities with alumni, parents, and local
community representatives
• Lead the planning, development and implementation of professional
development programs
• Set direction for major department programming, including large-scale
educational and special events
• Oversee resource management, program development, and assessment
activities while collaborating with key stakeholders
• Co-Chair the MICA Professional Development Committee and lead
initiatives related to strengthening professional development across the campus
• Design and Lead workshops on a variety of career and professional
development topics and provide professional development opportunities
• Counsel undergraduates, graduate students and alumni during individual
appointments
• Promote positive messages about careers in the arts to campus audiences
• Research trends in the art and design fields; translate research into
effective practice
• Research, develop, and create written materials on professional
development topics for the Career Center Library
• Represent career development at campus events such as Parents Weekend,
Open House and Orientation
• Participate in Student Affairs division and planning committees, and
related programs
• Perform other related duties as assigned
Position Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree in a related field
• Minimum 5 years of previous experience in career services, teaching,
advising, student affairs or arts administration enterprises
• Professional background as an artist or a demonstrated appreciation
for the arts & the development of student artists
• Knowledgeable about the working worlds of fine and commercial
artists/designers and related fields
• Ability to effectively communicate with both external and internal
constituencies
• Entrepreneurial style
• Experience in supervision and management of a team
• Successful Candidate will be required to complete a full background check
