I just spoke with Monika Proffitt, who is the founder of the STARRY NIGHT artist’s residency. She’s excited to present the following residency to the Academy’s alumni and is looking forward to seeing you there!

Starry Night Residency, in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, is an ideal place to let ideas distill. Speaking with Monika today, she described the Starry Night residency as a place with warm, supportive atmosphere, low cost, independence, clear sky, and room to breathe. (And, there’s a hot springs soaking tub, too.)

Monika is pleased to announce that Starry Night Retreat, in close partnership with the Sierra County Arts Council, is now open year round for Artists – and their creative or romantic partners, if they so choose to bring them. She hopes that the Academy’s alumni will benefit from this along with the community in New Mexico. Through the program, there is ideal space and time to bring together or explore a new body of work and the arts community in Truth or Consequences is extremely supportive. The Starry Night Retreat is growing with many opportunities and Monika is looking forward to including the Academy’s Alumni in her plans.

Starry Night Retreat’s AIR program grants artists the opportunity to live and work as part of a creative community through a partnership with the Estrella Gallery. Starry Night requires that applicants be prepared to engage the public and advocates creative interaction, especially with the other galleries and artist spaces in town. The AIR program’s primary goal is to support self directed artists, researchers in the creation of new works, offering an environment that promotes risk-taking and innovation in art in the rustic and quiet environment of southern New Mexico.

The goal of the Starry Night Residency is to support talented artists, writers and researchers at all stages of their career with a two week to twelve month stay in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. The residency includes lodging and soaking in the hot springs on the property at the Starry Night and access to storefront studio and exhibition space downtown. These residencies are partially subsidized live spaces and work spaces in a nearby art center and gallery. The cost to applicant is $250 per week with a minimum of two weeks, or $900 per four week term. Participants may apply to bring their partner or spouse with them for an additional $150 per week. Financial aid for applicants of optional merit is available.
