Call for Muralists - Museum of the Rockies, Bozeman

The project is a Children’s Discovery Room here at the Museum. The room is based on Yellowstone National Park, which is only an hour or so away from Bozeman. Bozeman is really a very culturally rich area with many resources, and many, many children. We need this room to actively engage children on ALL levels, and the mural will set the tone for the entire room.

AREA DESCRIPTIONS

Area 1: Roosevelt Arch Entrance (Lightbox: 1 Roosevelt Arch)
Area Details: This area is the entrance to the room and should provide the viewer with a visual invitation to explore the room. Sweeping landscapes, wildflowers, winding rivers, mountains should be incorporated. The in-house exhibits team will fabricate the arch around the door.
Size: Mural area is roughly 16-20 linear feet, 10-foot tall walls, 200 square feet.

Area 2: Mammoth Terraces (Lightbox: 2 Mammoth)
Area Details: The museum’s fabricated section of Mammoth will take up wall height and length. Mural will need to visually finish the terraces at the top of the fabricated terraces. The rest of the mural will need to show the area around Mammoth—dead trees, steaming terraces, possibly the buildings around Mammoth (not necessary, but could be used).
Size: Mural area is roughly 25-30 linear feet, 6 to 10-foot tall walls, 300 square feet.

Area 3: Bear in the Forest (Lightbox: 3 Bear Forest)
Area Details: This area will have fabricated tree coverage by the exhibits department. Mural would need to visually describe the density of the forest and foliage, but also maintain its use as a transition point between the “dead” area of Mammoth, and the open spaces of the Geyser Basin.
Size: Mural area is 8 linear feet, 10-foot tall walls, 300 square feet.

Area 4: Geyser Basin (Lightbox: 4 Geyser Basin)
Area Detail: This area will visually continue the fabricated geyser basin. It should describe the vastness of the basin and the geothermic features of the area. One side of the area will be the transition from Area 3, and should show a wooded area phasing into the geyser basin. The thermal effects of the geyser basin should be represented.
Size: Mural area is roughly 18 linear feet, 6 to 10 foot tall walls, 180 square feet

Area 5: Fishing Bridge (Lightbox: 5 Bridge)
Area Detail: The purpose of the area is to visually continue Yellowstone Lake and describe the area surrounding the lake. Some options to include would be big sky, trees, wildflowers, and bison in the background. Small section should include a wooded transition to Area 6, the Campsite.
Size: Mural is roughly 16 linear feet, 10 foot tall walls, 160 square feet

Area 6: Campsite (Lightbox: 6 Campsite)
Area Detail: This area will be similar to the wooded mural in Area 3. Should transition into woods from Area 5. This area will have fabricated trees built in to the wall as well.
Size: Mural is roughly 30 linear feet, 10-foot tall walls, 300 square feet

Area 7: Tot Area / Yellowstone Falls from Artist’s Point (Lightbox: 7 Waterfall)
Area Detail: This section will be a view of the Yellowstone Waterfall from Artist’s Point. One wall should have the falls, the other wall should portray the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. The bottom 3-4 feet of the walls will be covered with the padded bumpers for the Tot Area.
Size: Mural size of wall 1 is roughly 15 linear feet, 7-foot tall walls, 105 square feet
Mural size of wall 2 is roughly 10 linear feet, 7-foot tall walls, 70 square feet

Area 8: Park Exit (Lightbox: 8 Park Exit)
Area Detail: A large interactive board and postcard creation-station will cover some wall space in this area, but a mural will be needed to describe the large are of the Hayden Valley. Rolling hills, mountains in the background, bison, curving streams are all aspects of Hayden Valley.
Size: Mural size is roughly 10 linear feet, 7-foot tall walls, 70 square feet
