Opportunity for Artists
The Brevard Art Museum presents
a Juried Exhibition
Navel Gazing:
Artists Visions of Florida
January 30 – April 11, 2010
The Museum invites artists to submit
proposals for artwork that represent
their vision of Florida.
PROPOSAL SUBMISSION
DEADLINE NOVEMBER 9, 2009
The state of Florida embodies a rich history of Native Americans; Spanish conquistadors and the search for the fountain of youth; a utopia; a fantasyland; a vacation mecca; mythical landscapes of tropical abundance; miles of ocean; a bohemian refuge; an outlaw outpost; and a launching pad to space.
The Brevard Art Museum’s quest is to find artists who are able to reconstitute existing ideas or make fresh-squeezed interpretations of Florida.
Sixteen artists will be selected for the exhibition, eight Florida artists and eight from outside the state, allowing our audiences to compare and contrast an insider’s versus a tourist’s point of view on our diverse, complicated, beautiful, and always interesting home state.
For the eight artists who do not live within Florida, the Museum will provide a $1,000 honorarium to travel to and experience Florida and to seek or confront subjects, ideas, and inspiration for the art they will create for the exhibition. Travel must be completed by December 31, 2009. Selected artists will be required to document their experience with a journal, receipts, travel blog, video, photographs or by any means relating to their proposal in addition to creating their artwork(s) or installations.
For the eight artists who reside in Florida, the Museum will provide a $250 honorarium to encourage new reflections and new works of art from an insider’s point of view. As a counterpoint to the visiting artists’ travel documentation, selected Florida artists will be required to provide creative proof of their Florida bona-fides.
