Jamaica Flux: Workspaces & Windows 2010 - NYDeadline: December 12, 09. Jamaica Flux: Workspaces & Windows, a project of the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL) in Jamaica, New York, is a site-specific public art exhibition that is mounted approximately every three years with the intention of using the urban environment as a studio and exhibition space. The project includes the commission, creation, and exhibition of site-specific projects, which are installed at a variety of locations along Jamaica Avenue, including banks, mall lobbies, stores, restaurants, street corners, parks, and other public spaces. This installment’s theme is “Art as Action.” Possible interpretations include: art that references the expressionistic tradition of gestural “action painting”; art that literally performs an action, such as performance or event; art that aims to solve social problems through constructive action, as opposed to art that merely represents or symbolizes social problems. JCAL-s curator, Heng-Gil Han has added a new component to Jamaica Flux: Workspaces & Windows 2010, a Video Slam which will coincide with the exhibition’s opening in April. Twenty five videos related to the “Art as Action” theme will be selected. JCAL has issued an Open Call for Artists. Interested artists may view the complete RFP at www.jcal.org. A list of selected artists will be posted on JCAL’s website by February 1, 2010. Elvin R. Freytes
