Sophia Kayafas



Sophia Kafayas (b. 1991, West Virginia) is a figurative painter, musician and singer based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work delves into the complexities of her religious beliefs and contradictions, combining vibrant narratives with a profound curiosity. Kayafas’ creative practice reflects her personal experiences, dreams, fears, motivations, aversions, and aspirations, but they also transcend the boundaries of her own subjectivity, becoming vessels for universal themes and emotions.

After graduating from West Liberty University in West Virginia in 2014, Kayafas received her Masters of Fine Arts at the New York Academy of Art, where she concentrated in painting. There, she was awarded a year long Fellowship award the Beijing Summer Residency and served as a teaching assistant for a dynamic variety of painting and drawing professors.

Her paintings have been featured in solo exhibitions at Kirby Gallery (Wheeling, WV), Nutting. Gallery (West Liberty, WV), Wheeling Artisan Center (Wheeling, WV), and Shaw Galleries (Pittsburgh, PA). She has also participated in multiple group shows around New York City (New York Academy of Art, Flowers Gallery, High Line Stages, South Hamptons Art Center, Anastasiya Tarasenko Studios, Pratt University Gallery, Space Gallery St Barth, Wilkinson Gallery), Boston (Steven Zevitas Gallery), Miami (Chubb), and West Virginia (Stifle Fine Arts Center), as well as internationally (Edifice Belgo, Quebec and Joy Arts Gallery, Beijing). She is a part of the Chashama Studios Residency Program and her artwork has been featured in The New York Times.


Kayafas is the lead vocalist and guitarist for Safka, an alt rock indie music project. Her musical compositions reflect her spiritual and artistic explorations. She often incorporates elements of folk, jazz, and electronic genres, creating a unique and ethereal soundscape. Previously, she was co-host of the Emmy Award winning documentary series “Flowstate/North Brooklyn Artists.” Kayafas also served as a host, editor and producer for the Art Grind Podcast from 2018-2022.

Currently an instructor at the prestigious Pratt University's Foundation Department and Hudson County Community College’s Fine Art Department, and the New York Academy of Art Sumer Residency Program, Kayafas imparts her knowledge and expertise in drawing,painting, art history, and composition to aspiring artists. She can be found cycling around Brooklyn, NY and spending time walking the waterfront with her wife and rescue pup Vito.
