In the spring of 2022 Reisha Perlmutter traveled to the jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula and was enchanted by the magical waters of the Mexican cenotes.
Once Ruby Vizcarra agreed to share her incredible story, INCANDESCENCE was born, and the artist’s most ambitious multi medium project to date launched.
The exhibition encompasses 8 oil on canvas paintings, a limited edition fine art print, and a collection of photography from both above and below the waterline.
To transcend patrons further into INCANDESCENCE Reisha produced and directed a short film to accompany the exhibition shot on location in the Yucatan as well as en studio in New York City.
The premier of the film and debut of the exhibition will occur on April 13th, 2023 at 685 Third Avenue, NYC from 6-9pm.

ANASTASIYA TARASENKO
Let Me Tell You a Story
March 23 – April 29, 2023
Opening reception: Thursday, March 23, 6-8 PM
Monya Rowe Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new paintings by Anastasiya Tarasenkotitled Let Me Tell You a Story. The opening reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, March 23, 6-8 PM. An ONLINE VIEWING ROOM of works on paper will accompany the exhibition.
For her third solo exhibition at the gallery, Tarasenko has created a mythological world comprised of dragons, castles, sea serpents, pegasuses and witches, along with echoes of the fairytales Hansel and Gretel and Rapunzel: “I am exploring our contemporary culture as it intersects with ancient tropes of folk tales, mythology and heroic legends. In all essentials, we are the same as our ancestors, plagued by the same problems and inhabiting the same failing bodies. I lay our desires and vulnerabilities bare.”

This exhibition is the first collaboration between Lithuanian-American artist Sigita R. Praneviciene and Thai-American artist Yupin Pramotepipop. Their works will be on view at SLA Art Space from March 10–31, 2023
The name of the exhibition is Habitat. This is because the space of this gallery becomes the habitat where the different styles of these two artists come together; the light and magic of Sigita’s prints reflect off the strength and symbolism of Yupin’s creations. The viewer can wander in between the different works, taking in the interplay of feelings and ideas from one work to the next.

The New York Society of Women Artists (NYSWA) was founded in 1925 and devoted itself to avant-garde women artists. The organization initially had 23 painters and sculptors, all recognized as professionals. Four of the original members participated in the Armory Show, some were members of the Whitney Studio Club and the Society of Independent Artists. NYSWA’s venerated founding members earned Guggenheim Fellowships, Prix de Rome, and engagement with the Federal Arts Project during the New Deal. As a Society, women artists had more support and exhibition opportunities.
Today, NYSWA persists in strength as it nears its centennial and reflects the voices of its inter-generational, multi-ethnic members. The organization has nearly tripled in size and limits itself by charter to 60 active members — who continue to garner acclaim as they prevail with fortitude, making art in solidarity. Celebrating Women’s History Month, NYSWA is pleased to exhibit at the Queens College Art Center to present a wide range of art by female artists of New York.

Portrait Society Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to present Cruces|Crossroads, a two-person exhibition featuring Herman Aguirre Martinez and Rafael Francisco Salas.
The work of these artists exists at a nexus of experience and identity. The title refers to the complementary and also contradictory nature of two Latinx artists who together create an expansive meditation on rural and urban experience, the conflicts of establishing an American life from immigrant roots, and the spiritual and poetic power that painting has to describe the “cruces”or crossroads that Martinez and Salas have experienced in their lives.

Murphy creates figure dressed in the most formal black and white gowns. Introducing the idea of monochrome, the use of black and white dresses adds an element of formality and timelessness to the pieces, while the carefree and exuberant figures challenge societal expectations of how women should conduct themselves. The dresses serve as a visual representation of the contrast between the expectations placed upon women and the reality of their experiences. The figures themselves represent the triumph of the feminine spirit, embracing their freedom and taking control of their own narratives. In exploring solitude, each solo figure shows strength and confidence as she moves within her space, embodying the idea of a visual Sonata. Murphy is depicting the power of femininity, the beauty of self-assuredness, and the freedom that can be found in moments of celebration

“The Silent Land” explores our reactions to aging and loss, while celebrating the power of memory to provide solace. Whaley creates images of impermanence, innocence, and transformation across decades. Using simple moments in home and garden she listens to the sounds of family, paining the echo of a violin, a fragment of an old statue, a dance almost forgotten in the photo album.

In Alvaro’s work, reality is captured in a very allegoric and unapologetic way. He’s influenced by his environment and surroundings; from the swagger of the Harlem streets to introspection and intimacy.
He’s conscious about the human structure and anatomy, but at the end he allows the medium to take control and deliver pleasant results through loose strokes and splashes. He puts his soul in every single drip and brush stroke administered. No precision and planning is necessary.
Each figure comes out of the page as if arriving from a climatic, yet surreal dream. Each figure is constantly moving and attached to a provocative narrative.

In Imaginary Homelands, Alicia Brown celebrates the perseverance of migrants who have left their home countries either voluntarily or by force. Brown uses portraiture to tell the stories of friends and family from Jamaica residing in the United States. She combines elements from Jamaican culture including native plants, animals, objects, symbols, and idioms with elements from Western art and history. In doing so, Brown examines the duality of who a subject was in their homeland and who they become in order to adapt and survive in a foreign culture. Objects such as Elizabethan ruff collars evoke narratives of power, control, and social status, while native Caribbean plants create an environment of home. In these powerful portraits, Brown celebrates the ingenuity with which immigrants both adapt to and shape their adopted homes.
