Pragati Gunasekar (b. 1990, Chennai, India) is an interdisciplinary conceptual artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Her practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, and stop-motion animation, engaging with socio-political histories of race, caste, labor, and erasure, and seeking to dismantle intra-race hierarchies through material and poetic inquiry.
Working through research, material experimentation, and archival reconstruction, Pragati examines how inherited power structures manifest through the body, material, and collective memory. Through projects such as A Tax Paid in Flesh and Cast(e) in India, she reimagines overlooked narratives to expose entrenched systems of power and transform them into spaces of visibility and resistance.
She earned her MFA from the New York Academy of Art (2025), where she also served as Adjunct Faculty in the Summer Residency Program. Her work has been exhibited in New York and internationally, including at Powerhouse Arts, the New York Academy of Art, and other independent and institutional spaces.
