The term "memoir" as a theme refers to a collection of works that express personal memories, experiences, and stories of the artist. It's a deeply personal narrative that captures specific moments or periods in the artist's life, often evoking a sense of intimacy and authenticity.
The aim is to connect with the audience on a personal level, inviting viewers to engage with the art in a way that resonates with their own experiences and memories.

Holy Terrors is a show about family. The artist’s family albums were lost upon her family immigrating to the United States. As such, she primarily works from found black and white family portraits sourced from thrift stores, markets, vintage shops, or donated, having lost the ones from her own life and that of her forebears. Her monochromatic visions glow with kaleidoscopic color, watching the viewer watch them back in turn.
There is a constant thread of nostalgia inherent in Martins’ practice. The photos she employs frequently capture moments of wonder, melancholy, strength and vulnerability, their hollow framework inviting the viewer to find themselves in the images. The process of watercolor both captures the immediacy of childhood and like adolescence, its inevitable fading. In her words, “In Portuguese we have a term, saudade, which is nostalgia for a place you've never been or something you've never experienced. Nostalgia for imaginary experiences”. The show conjures relatable stories as she shows the joy and excitement of childhood, the angst of maturing, and the complicated dynamics of adulthood with conflicts often raging beneath the surface.

This exhibition presents new works created using reductive linocut techniques, where each colour represents a different layer carved into a block and inked in relief. The images are set in the artist's home community of Callander, a small town in northern Ontario, Canada. In a small, lakeside community that booms in the summer months with cottagers, the experience of growing up combines beauty and boredom with fantastical and mythic elements. The compositions are meant to be tableau vivants, with details that the viewer can move between to form an open-ended narrative, and where the numerous pictures work together to describe a world that blends fiction with reality. The colour palette is muted and nostalgic, while the figures direct their gaze away from the viewer, absorbed in idle introspection with a suspended sense of time.

Lupton's work weaves together individual and societal rituals, spiritual tension, and self-defining myth, thereby illuminating the various attempts at and desires for clarity. These overlaps create narratives that play out on the canvas – borrowing their basis from Greek myths, religious rituals, rock lyrics, modern dating plights, domestic routines, history, introspection, sexuality, and compulsions – as Lupton casts a contemporary world of anxiety though questions of identity, masculinity, ego, modern-day loneliness, domesticity, and mental health.

This exhibition is part of a Biennial series and group exhibition that affords us a statewide perspective and brings together artist’s work from their studios. This series has brought six artists together under a curatorial premise that included many different media such as: painting, photography, sculpture, mixed-media, drawing, studio-glass. What makes an artist’s work unique to them? This exhibition is an exploration of what it means to live in today’s world as a working artist. What keeps them coming back to the studio, to their creative lives. The exhibition will pull the curtain back into the heart of what makes these artists work in the ways they do. Using techniques, materials, and varied approaches to keep their artistic drive as interesting to them, as to encounter the result.

Shadow-Ban defies global censorship and the restrictions placed on visual culture today. Social media posts of even the slightest sexual nature are resulting in artists and creatives being shadow-banned by the morals of an algorithm. By definition, shadow-ban means to block (a user) from a social media site or online forum without their knowledge, usually by making their posts and comments no longer visible to other users.
Established in 1984, the non-profit Tom of Finland Foundation protects, preserves and promotes the legacy of Tom of Finland, and supports LGBTQ+ artists’ creative freedom of expression.
Shadow-Ban runs at the SHOWstudio Gallery in London from 19th September-15th November.

“Imaginary Homelands” by Alicia Brown and Daisy Patton
In Imaginary Homelands, the body becomes a vessel for storytelling, exploring identity, diaspora, place, and time. Inspired by Dutch master portraiture, Alicia Brown’s gorgeously decorated figures pose as a pointed connection to the history of the Caribbean and Colonialism. Patron’s focus on women from the southwest Asia and the Northern African region speaks to her efforts to re(connect) with Iranian culture and the inferiority of women's lives which often go unrecognized despite how they carry forward family histories.

These narratives include birth, but also the important moments and milestones that profoundly shape our identities, ones that often result in a sense of rebirth. Guevara’s paintings connect these personal accounts with archetypal tales that have resonated throughout humanity for millennia in order to tap into the collective unconscious, revealing the shared emotions that connect us all to our origins.

Reisha Perlmutter’s oil paintings capture and secure our attention with a virtuoso performance of technical accomplishment. She makes compelling images of women, submerged and moving through water, bathed in a diffuse and fluid medium that suggests an otherworldly existence. Painted in a forensically-accurate representational style, her ethereal scenarios insist on a sensuous and corporeal physicality.
Perlmutter’s deft handling confers a convincing sense of immanent reality through a rigorous rendering of tonal value, subtle colour and delicate expression of the texture of skin and hair. The aquatic world is conjured up by her skilful description of rippling, glassy reflections, sparkling effervescences and luminous modulations of the ‘chiaroscuro’ effects of a body suspended in water.
A recurrent theme is that of descent and escape into the ‘other’. The exhibition title ‘As Above, So Below’ implies a nether world of experience accessed through some form of portal. Myth, legend and religion all sanctify water sources as openings into profound spiritual experience. Reisha Perlmutter’s atmospheric and sensual paintings with their allusions to rebirth and regeneration take us closer to such experiences.

Trombetta is influenced by the American Hudson River School artists known as the country’s first art movement andby the 19th C Italian artists known as the Macchiaioli (macchia-stain) who wanted to break free from the Italian academic traditions by working all aperto (outdoors). The latest body of artwork is focusing on the ever changing facade of New York City as well as abandoned buildings through out the East cost through the Midwest.
This would include theaters, schoolhouses and factories and mom & pop storefronts. This is a passion of mine is to explore and create works of art that speak of the history of a area that is disappearing from the American Landscape.
I am trying to find the right view that is not the norm from the everyday bystander.
My love of textures is a constant presence in my work and the rough surfaces are vital through the ever-changing layers of graffiti and dirt. This is also emphasized through the constant layers of paint that comes through when creating a painting.
It’s with these sometimes ugly, colorful patinas that express a moment in time that is often gone or erased through constant change of the urban environment.
It’s with this constant change as an artist to always carry a sketchbook and camera in hand, never knowing what could be and never shutting down that curiosity factor of what could be a potential painting.

For her first solo show, Kelly Robert, the Italian-based American artist presents fourteen sculptures in terra cotta and enamel, marble, and for the first time, also in bronze. Included in these is her largest work to-date: a sculpture in marble measuring 184 cm.
Robert uses the human form to explore the spiritual and bodily impact of life-changing experiences. In the artist’s own words, the idea behind each piece “is a representation, in a way, of a transitional moment, where your life is forever impacted by what's happening”. Each sculpture is an homage to such transformational shifts in being.
The term “uplift” was chosen for the title for its relation to both the emotional and material dimension of her work. Like Robert’s figures, the organic materials with which she creates her sculptures once rose, under pressure, from the depths to present themselves in their current state.
As the artist states: “It is my hope that this body of work offers us an insight into our resilience as humans just as we witness the Earth pushing itself forward in its uplift process. I want my work to remind us that even in the most difficult moments, we can push through and rise beyond what we perceive as holding us back."

This is how the conversation started: “The world is made of two forces that can only be named in relation to one another.”
And of course, someone brought up the Tao Te Ching…
which begins:
The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao.
The name that can be named is not the eternal name.
The nameless is the beginning of heaven and Earth.

Welancora Gallery is pleased to present Metamorphoses | Μεταμορφώσεις, a solo presentation of a suite of self-portraits and other works on paper and panel by Darryl Keith Babatunde Smith. The title of the show takes its name from Ovid’s 8 CE epic, Metamorphoses, which tells the story of the creation of the world to Julius Caesar’s death. The poem utilizes real events and mythology to confront issues related to transformation and love. Smith’s extensive research and mastery of linguistics and classical studies provide the basic framework for the works in the show, as he utilizes myth and language as a way to understand his journey as a queer Black man. In the same way that one myth flows into another in Ovid’s epic, transformations occur across and throughout Smith’s works, each of which is a representation of a state of time and being in his life. Closely following the era of Greco-Roman antiquity, Smith refers to marble statues and black-figure/red-figure vase paintings, both of which have represented African people. The delicacy and softness of Smith’s works in metalpoint, gold leaf, and egg tempera lend themselves to the artist’s self-healing, vulnerability, and reclamation of space through portraiture.

Price's art, set against the backdrop of Provincetown, captures the unbridled freedom and visibility embraced by the queer community—a sanctuary where kinship flourishes. In his forthcoming exhibition, Price weaves inspiration from cherished works of art, many imbued with queer themes. "Evasion Redux," a homage to Jared French's "Evasion," portrays the tumultuous dance between self-acceptance and societal expectations, positioning the figure within a haven of queer solace. "First Timers" reveals three young men, bravely and provocatively exploring their sexuality publicly for the first time, basking in the glow of the sun and newfound liberation. In "Who Wants to Play," a young man uncovers enchantment by the shore.

Galerie Lucida is pleased to present Periphera, an exhibition of Contemporary Realism by local and regional artists who convene periodically to paint “en plein air,” yet maintain distinct and diverse studio practices.
Periphera upends the widely held view that Contemporary Realism is a static, straightforward depiction of reality by exposing the fluid, expressive nature of the movement.
Participating artists Jordan Baker, Kathleen Beausoleil, Charis J. Carmichael Braun, Brooks Frederick, Kristin Künc, Lisa Lebofsky, JaFang Lu, Richard T. Scott, Hyeseung Song, and Patricia Watwood embrace a common discipline, yet their approach to the medium and interpretations of subject are markedly distinct.
With the presentation of paintings representative of each artist’s personal vision and inspired use of traditional techniques, along with comparative groupings of small works from their collective excursions, Periphera straddles the porous edge where private space meets common ground and offers a multivalent glimpse into Contemporary Realist imagery.

The exhibit aims to challenge the traditional perceptions and highlight the individuality of each artist’s interpretation. The artists come from various backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, and their artworks reflect their personal experiences and perspectives on the subject.
The art exhibition not only showcases the artists’ interpretations of skin color but also serves as both a platform for discussion and a challenge to the traditional standards and perceptions. It confronts societal norms and perceptions and encourages viewers to see skin color in a new light.
The timing of the exhibit is also significant, as it comes at a time when conversations about race and representation are at the forefront of social and political discussions. The exhibit serves as a reminder of the power of art to spark awareness and bring about change.

New York, NY - Forum Gallery presents a two-person exhibition of new and bold figurative works by Alyssa Monks (b. 1977) and Clio Newton (b. 1989), opening Thursday, January 18, 2024. The two women are among today’s most influential, internationally-recognized artists. While each has a unique approach to her art, both artists employ formidable technique to portray a thoroughly contemporary sensibility.
Diving deeply and unapologetically into charged, impassioned moments revelatory of their female subjects, Monks’ oil paintings and Newton’s works in charcoal, colored pencil or oil are vivid expressions arising from the unique personal perspective of each artist, described in her own distinct visual language.
Viewed together, the eleven works in the exhibition are complementary and widely different visual experiences, commanding our attention while illuminating the accomplishments of two visionary leaders of contemporary figuration.
The exhibition opens with a reception for the artists on Thursday, January 18, 2024 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, and will be on view through Saturday, March 2, 2024.

Rachel Bensimon, originally from Toronto and now residing in New York, embarks on an artistic journey that delicately intertwines the innocence and profound intensity of childhood. Holding an MFA from The New York Academy of Art, her work delves into the psychology of capturing the essence of childhood innocence and inadvertent subversity.
Infusing her fascination with dolls, objects of a child's idealization and adoration, into her figures, Rachel's portraits skillfully blur the lines between reality and fantasy. In her recent series, she portrays girls and young women within imaginative contexts, often adorned with animals, flowers, bubbles, and lollipops against patterned backgrounds.

Athens Art Gallery is pleased to present the solo exhibition of the American artist Darryl Keith Babatunde Smith titled: Whispered Lines. A polyglot, and knowledgeable of the ancient and contemporary Greek language, inspired by the ancient sculpture, as well as by his own image, the artist is going to present a series of 15 works on paper.
The curator Elizabeth Plessa writes: “The painting of Darryl Keith Babatunde Smith or ΔΚΒΣ, in the Greek version of his name and personality, seems to be defined by the many aspects of time. Smith studies languages in order to traverse the time between his own time and the texts of the art he loves. The multilingual titles of his works refer not only to various chapters of mythology and culture, but also to a peculiar bridging between ancient languages and his own, contemporary English. Even the material that he mostly uses has passed through centuries from the Northern Renaissance until today. Like the pages from the time of a journal, each of his works is, to him, the encoded memory of a personal moment which has been immersed in ancient Greek sculpture and the myths that birthed it. Between that past and the present, the body stands silent, his own body, depicted in ancient positions that approach painting through the ways of sculpture."

With our participation at multiple art fairs overseas since then, it is safe to say that we have returned to form! We are now very pleased to announce our return to The Sunshine State’s original and longest-running contemporary and modern art fair, Art Miami, where we will present a stunning selection of new works by a carefully curated group of American and international artists.

Growing up on the island of Jamaica, Massachusetts painter Andrae Green says that the Caribbean Sea never played a huge part in his conscious life, but he was always aware of its presence. He knew, unconsciously, that he could go to it whenever he wanted and that it would always be there for him. He remembers his father bringing his family to Kingston Harbor and watching the young boys jump off the docks, into the abyss. Their fearless trust in the sea always fascinated him. Their leaps of faith inspired him.
Since moving to western Massachusetts and no longer having easy access to the sea, Green feels a longing that has translated into his most recent body of work: paintings that speak to the limitless potential for human imagination and freedom (a perspective that is very needed in these times) and drawings about weightlessness and freedom, all inspired by bodies of water and the Caribbean landscape. Green says that in the Caribbean mind, the sea, “Brings both joy and fear, love and hate, hope and resentment.”

Anna Zorina presents “Cast Shadows,” James Razko’s debute solo exhibition featuring his latest series of paintings, “Monomyth,” and recent work from his acclaimed “Tiles” series. In “Cast Shadows,” Razko masterfully employs what he calls “hyper-illusion,” challenging viewers to distinguish between reality and imagination. “Monomyth” initially resembles collages but then transforms into intricate mythologically-pregnant manipulations of compressed space. “Meanwhile, in ‘Tiles,’ Razko merges Western Trompe L’oeil and Islamic mosaic traditions, revealing complex narratives beneath the lifelike surface, marked by the passage of time and conflict.” Razko’s work across both series underscores the pivotal role of illusion in transcending personal and cultural boundaries while exploring universal themes of humanity.

Roots and Vessels delves into the intricate tapestry of human existence, exploring the profound themes of ancestry, the body, lineage, and family portraits. This exhibition features works by nationally acclaimed artists Andrae Green, Billie Lee, Daisy Patton, Lisa Iglesias, and Mark Guglielmo. The diverse works of these contemporary artists invite you to explore the multifaceted connections that bind us to our past, present, and future. The artists in this exhibition employ a range of mediums to convey the essence of lineage, reminding us that our roots are not just a place but a profound part of who we are. The artists included in this exhibition are connected through process by mining family archives and found footage, recalling memories of home and imagined landscapes, and even collaborating with family members. In many of these works, the body serves as a vessel for these stories. These artists illuminate the complexities of how we can carry the imprints of generations, embodying both the history and future of our families. This exhibition is curated by Professor and Gallery Director Priya N. Green. The artist panel will be moderated by CCSU Curatorship students Wayka Galarza-Rodriguez and Emilie López.

Salon 21 is pleased to present Incorporeum, a solo exhibition by Lucía Rodríguez Pérez, opening to the public on Thursday, October 5, 2023. Rodríguez Pérez’s work explores the allure of color and the uncertain nature of space. Through her use of shapes and shades, she creates a connection between representation and abstraction, defying realism. The exhibition showcases a series of nine paintings that transport the viewer to a dream-like world. The carefully chosen color palettes create patterns and shapes that fill the canvas, encouraging one to explore the work both as a representation and a surface. By embracing ambiguity as a conceptual space beyond language, Rodríguez Pérez challenges the audience to piece together one’s own interpretation of this reality. The work encourages the viewer to comprehend lived experiences from a new perspective, where illusion and abstraction converge.

ETHER CREATURE, a solo exhibition of works by Charlotte Segall, curated by Greenpoint Gallery Director Shawn James.
Opening: Thursday, Sept 14, 2023, 7-11pm
Greenpoint Gallery is pleased to present ETHER CREATURE, a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings by Brooklyn-based artist Charlotte Segall. Curator Shawn James explains, “Segall’s works exist between two realms. There is the realm we know, the tangible and familiar, and then there is something else that beckons us in. We don’t quite know what this other world holds, but we sense it moving, and we are sensitized to something inter-dimensional.”
Segall explains that she is “always trying to create a sense of dramatic event. The event itself is usually not clear, but it’s clear that the people and animals involved are invested. They are eager or entranced, curious, intentional, forceful, pleasured, exhausted, in danger, transcendent, transforming, noble, abject, and usually trying or have tried their absolute best. Each character is packed with its own hero’s journey. In this way, I offer up a life philosophy about what it feels like to pursue meaning and resonance. The ability to create impact is one definition of power— and empowerment is always being negotiated, both inside and out.”
