Originally from Southern California, Shauna Finn received her MFA in painting from the New York Academy of art in 2005, and has attended art residencies in Italy, France, St. Barth and Ireland. She is predominantly a figurative painter, although her work has also included paintings of colorful birds and dark botanicals, as well as sculpture and pottery. Shauna's studio is in Hoboken, NJ, and she teaches 3D art at Elisabeth Irwin High School in Manhattan.
Shauna’s current paintings depict mysterious female figures who shift between various states of obscurement and illumination. Their faces are at times hidden in shadow or behind diaphanous veils; eyes are obscured or pierce the viewer's gaze from behind a mask. Subtleties of light and various adornments push the imagery beyond straightforward realism toward the ethereal or surreal, while the subjects simultaneously conceal themselves and are revealed to the viewer almost as apparitions.
