What role does experimentation play in your artistic development?
Experimentation plays a large role in what I do. In this intersection of printmaking and painting that I work in, there’s a constant searching and trial that happens in finding what materials make what kinds of marks, how I can use stamping and printing to create patterns and textures, and how different substrates can be used to apply or remove paint as I’m working. There are straps of canvases and whole paintings I make around my studio that are just set up to fail from the beginning to experiment with.
What painting might people be surprised to find you adore?
I’m not sure about a specific painting, but I do really love how Norman Rockwell paints. He is such a master of the medium, a lot of people get caught up on the content.
What's happening in your studio right now?
I’m just preparing for a show here in Berlin, so currently all the paintings are drying and getting wrapped for pick up. Which feels nice to be over the little hill.
If your artwork could talk, what do you think it would say about you?
I think I’d rather not know what it says about me.
If your artwork had a soundtrack, what songs would be on it?
It would be a lot of what I listen to in the studio anyway… but more specifically I’d say a mix of Velvet Underground, Modest Mouse, Radiohead, and Bob Dylan.
How does your cultural background or personal experiences influence your art?
I guess my personal experiences. My work deals with my OCD and anxiety, so while not everything I paint is a direct correlation to my life, it all stems out of that. But I feel that’s pretty hard to avoid as an artist anyways.
Who are your favorite writers?
I‘ll go with Franz Kafka, Richard Siken, and George Orwell, as those among the top.
